Is Meta AI Giving Away “Midjourney Quality” for Free?

Last Updated: December 7, 2025By

If you have been scrolling through YouTube or TikTok lately, you might have heard a wild rumour: “Meta AI is now offering Median Equality images for free.”

If you scratched your head and wondered what “Median Equality” is – you are not alone. It turns out, it was a simple case of mishearing. What they meant to say was “Midjourney Quality”.

The claim? That Meta (the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) is now letting you generate images that look just as good as the paid tool Midjourney, but for absolutely zero cost. Some even claimed Meta was running Midjourney on the backend.

We decided to put this to the test at AI Spark. Is it true? And can you really cancel your Midjourney subscription?

The Myth vs. The Reality:

First, let’s clear up the tech gossip.

  • The Myth: Meta has partnered with Midjourney to give you free images.
  • The Reality: False. Meta is using its own AI model called Emu (and Llama 3). It has nothing to do with Midjourney.

However, the reason for the rumour is valid: Meta’s new image generator is shockingly good. It’s fast, it’s photorealistic, and yes, it is currently free.

The Experiment: Midjourney vs. Meta AI

To see if the “quality” claim holds up, we ran the exact same prompt through both tools.

The Prompt:

“A futuristic living room with biophilic design, teal velvet sofa, soft lighting, floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of a rainy city, 8k resolution, photorealistic.”

1. Midjourney (The Paid Pro)

  • Cost: Approx £8-£20/month.
  • The Vibe: Midjourney tends to be “artistic.” It loves drama. When you put this prompt in, you usually get moody lighting, incredible texture on the velvet, and a composition that looks like an Architectural Digest cover.
  • The Result:Verdict: Stunning, moody, and very high detail.

2. Meta AI (The Free Challenger)

  • Cost: Free (via WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger).
  • The Vibe: Meta is built for speed. It generates images almost instantly. The style tends to be cleaner, brighter, and a bit more like a high-end stock photo than a moody art piece.
  • The Result:

Verdict: Surprisingly sharp. It understood “biophilic” and “teal velvet” perfectly. It lacks a bit of the “soul” of Midjourney, but for a free tool? It is incredible.

*As of 7/12/2025, I did NOT have ‘animate’ access in Meta to the images created and also no image/ video access in Whatsapp:

The “Killer Feature”: Animation

This is where Meta AI actually pulls ahead of the pack for casual users.

If you generate an image in Meta AI (especially on WhatsApp), you can turn it into a video in seconds.

How to do it (UK Guide):

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the colourful circle icon (Meta AI) above your chats.
  3. Type your image prompt.
  4. Once the image pops up, reply to it with the word “Animate” (or look for the animation option in the menu).
  5. Watch as the rain starts falling outside the window or the lights softly glow.

It creates a 3-second video clip, perfect for social media stories. In Midjourney, this is a paid feature and costly, too.

Final Verdict: Should You Cancel Midjourney?

Keep Midjourney if:

  • You are a professional designer (like us at AI Spark).
  • You need exact control over aspect ratios, lighting, and camera angles.
  • You need high-resolution files for print or client presentations.

Use Meta AI if:

  • You need quick mood boards or inspiration.
  • You want fun, moving images for Instagram Stories or TikTok.
  • You just want to play with AI without a monthly subscription.

The bottom line: It’s not “Midjourney,” but for a free tool right in your pocket? It is definitely a spark worth exploring.
